Arden Rose,
The Art of Immersion: Painting Nature, Portraits, and the Hidden Self. For Arden Rose, the natural world is not merely a backdrop for human life but a revered, animated force that speaks directly to the soul. Working amidst the splendor of her native British Columbia, she cites light, color, and the abstract purity of nature as the catalysts for her creativity. Rose says her work is sparked by simple moments of observation: in the forest or by the water, she feels herself transported to another plane, wholly immersed in the sensory realm. This state of captivation is spiritual for her—a kind of personal dialogue with the earth—and it lies at the core of her artistic practice. Rose's work is rooted in the desire to capture and imprint that profound concentration and embodied perception onto canvas. Beginning with thousands of photographs—her phone alone holds more than 5,000 images of forests, ponds, and fleeting light—she spends hours curating a small pool of reference images. From there, the process unfolds in ways both meditative and meticulous..
At first, Rose works closely from the photographs to establish structure. As the process unfolds, she enters a flow state, responding viscerally to the light and movement she perceives through a collaboration of both conscious perception and the less tangible "mind's eye." There is a physical component integral to the creation of these paintings. In front of the canvas, Rose moves with the canvas—advancing, retreating, head tilted in thoughtful dialogue. At times, she draws so near she laughs, surprised by her own immersion. This intimate, embodied process brings her paintings to life, much like wind stirring through leaves—subtle, alive, and rooted in the rhythms of the natural world. Her playful approach allows her paintings to unfold in energetic bursts, filling them with movement, color, and light. They possess a dreamlike quality that reflects her openness and immersion in the materials and process. Unafraid to let intuition guide her, Rose imbues her work with an organic vitality that mirrors the natural world she reveres.
Portraiture offers Rose a different, yet equally compelling, avenue for expression. She sees portraiture as both mask and mirror—a metaphor for the dual nature of identity. Inspired by Modigliani’s abstracted beauties, she approaches her figures with freedom and imagination, often inventing graceful faces and forms from memory and intuition.
Occasionally, she refers to photographs to work out a particular pose or structure, but her real interest lies in what is hidden: the trauma, pain, and divinity that each human carries but rarely reveals. For Rose, painting is an act of profound introspection and a source of connection. Her works invite us to look beyond the visible, to inhabit her way of seeing — a vision shaped by both sensitivity and vulnerability. Through her luminous landscapes and intimate portraits, she creates a space where viewers can glimpse not just the world as she perceives it, but the quiet emotional resonance that lies beneath its surface.
