Venice was built on 118 islands in the middle of the Venetian Lagoon in Northern Italy. Ever since its birth in around 400 AD, the only way to get anywhere was by boat or on foot, and it remains the same today. Venice, known also as the “City of Canals”, is arguably one of Italy's most picturesque cities. During Carnival there are gondola and boat parades along the Grand Canal, and a mask parade in Piazza San Marco.

Carnival originated as a celebration of the last days before Lent. Because traditionally many people fast during Lent, giving up meat, sugar or other foods and drink, carnival is an opportunity to enjoy these treats for the last time.

Being brought up as a heathen, Claudette doesn’t actually observe Lent but she definitely loves to attend Carnival and take advantage of all the fun and merriment. Questions have arisen regarding Claudette’s budget. Her income source is currently unknown, but she seems to have a lot of money, certainly enough to travel often…. Did she make it herself, is she an heiress, did she have a husband with a big pension that died, or…?
